Most sediment will gradually settle to the bottom and it's a good indication that the water filter will likely need to be changed more frequently. Hand wash the dispenser, lid, pouring tray, and removable filter cover (select models only) with mild soapy water. When you first purchase or replace your new PUR water filter, you will notice that the initial water coming out of the nozzle is colored. The time you will spend doing this simple exercise depends on the type of PUR water filter you have in your home.
If you don't soak the filter (it's highly recommended that you soak the new filter), it would take twice as much water for the carbon residue to be completely removed. For example, if you have a refrigerator water filter, run five gallons of water to remove carbon residue and contaminants. Your refrigerator water filter will last longer, up to six months, with a 200-gallon output. PUR has several products available to filter water, but filters become less effective over time as they fill with contaminants.
